Thanks for the advice, I knew that my boat wasnt the best for all out speed, but are you saying that it isnt really even safe at 50? I thought that a nice slow, shut down(and maybe some trim adjustment) would help alleviate the "luck factor" on how the hull reenters the water.
After this and some other advice, I have indeed decided to leave the intake where it is, and eventually go with an energizer kit. Safety really is the biggest concern. FWIW I have a couple "old" jet boat friends(actually friends of my father) who used to run drag boats many years ago.....they quit the "go fast" after nearly all of their friends ended up dead or paralyzed...I do fully realize the risks here. I was 19 when I got my first ride in a recently restored/converted "lake boat" by one of those "old" friends. I am hopeful he will be the one to teach me how to drive...
As for the resto recipe...yeah...I know. I've restored a couple cars myself, lost money on both, but I like to think that it was worth the knowledge I gained. At this point, I dont really set a goal on how much to spend....as I know its rather irrelevant...it takes what it takes and hopefully along the way I can score some good deals and learn a few things. At this point the energizer kit will be what breaks the bank. But that is in stage two of the resto(along with that 400 to 450hp olds). Stage one, is just to get it back on the water and learn to drive with a "stock" rebuilt 455. I am still looking for a good(read cheap) supplier for the resin, mat, and cloth .....but I still havent even gotten the floor out yet. So I am obviously in no big hurry(I am also "restoring" our house we got last year....lots to keep me busy). Plus, I finally got my pool table set up and try to play at least a few games a day....been waiting several years for that one too...
Thanks again squeeek....if you really want to see pics of my rear end I can go take some....lol.....I mean of the boat of course.....
| squeeek wrote: | | Any pics of the rear of the boat ??? If you look at the bottom of the bow from the side(2nd pic) you'll notice how sharp an angle the keel enters the water. This area is what makes these boats very unpredictable and deadly. When the front re enters the water at hi speed this biting edge will do one of 3 things. Go straight (if your lucky), turn hard left or turn hard right. I will tell you its no fun getting pitched out of any boat at 50mph let alone at 70. Your boat was designed to be as safe as possible when built just the way it sits. When you start moving stuff around your taking away the safety factor. Sure a set back pump and 500hp will get you to 70 with no problem, its getting it stopped thats going to ruin your day. I just finished doing a complete resto. First thing to do is sit down and figure out how much money you want to invest and how much time you want to spend do this. Now multiply those 2 numbers by 3. Still sound like fun ??? Moving the pump and engine back will change the center of gravity, so will a couple fat gurls. You dont need more problems and I still say leave it the way it is for safety sake. |

| I did not intend to scare you. Your boat should be safe to around 60 or so. What I was trying to say is just be damn careful. Hitting the water at 40+ is just like jumping off a motorcycle onto concrete (been there, done that). Here is a thought. Say you did get this boat to run 70. One of your buddys boats goes 80. Now you cant beat him and want to go even faster. Sooner or later there is a limit you will hit, lets say money or motor or what ever. No matter what you do somebody will always have a faster boat. Throw a killer paint job on it, nice interior, rockin tunes and a reliable starts the first time engine. I think you will thank me in the long run. |

I am definitely the competitive sort. And you hit the nail on the head with the "rockin tunes"...I used to be a pro car audio installer to put myself through school....I have very extensive collection of amps, speakers, the works(some of which is being sold to fund this project ), but I should still have enough left over to get the job done. Also worked at a body shop for a summer....the paint wont be super flashy, but it will definitely be "clean"(at least at stage two).
As for who is faster, its like my father said...there is always someone tougher.....im sure his comment is in the same spirit. I realize this, if I really want to go fast though....then its time for "boat number two".
It does seem that Lucas Oil has picked my backyard(Missouri) for some serious drags, but most likely you will only see me in the stands....or maybe...hopefully, in the pits lending a hand....
Thanks again.....here, and in the future(so I dont have to keep sayin it....lol)

| This years FBI stats say Sagnasty is the worst city in the USA for violent crimes per population. Trust me, you dont want to get turned around in this town. I been here 55 years and its not getting any better. I cleaned up my hood but its just a small safe part of this town. Funny you mentioned car radios. I sit on my front porch with my hi power pellet gun and shoot the back windows out of them punks cars going BOOM BOOM BOOM. When they come back bitchin I tell them it must have been all that bass. If they get to rowdy with me i'll lean forward and show them my tec-9 and they leave real fast, quietly but fast. |

Funny...St. Louis, and East St. Louis(our Illinois cousin) both have the same reps.....and rightfully so....
Good luck huntin those radios......gotta admit, I did my fair share of boomin in my youth.....more into sound quality these days though.
Remind me not to get too "rowdy" round ya; though keep in mind, someone always has a bigger one....lol

yeah.....not a fan of alot of rap, but do like the real old stuff.....every now and then I'll hear something new I like. I try to keep an open mind. Grew up in a small mid Missouri town, with literally one black person, maybe two. Needless to say my music appreciation for rap was not well received...oh well. I like all kinds of music(sounds cliche I know)....just as long as its well played. American Idol makes me want to shove an ice pick in my ears and gouge my eyes out though, along with the rest of reality tv.....I have enough "reality" in my life.
Crazy? Well if you know you're crazy, you're really not that crazy....its the ones that DONT know they are crazy that are REALLY crazy.....lol.
Crazy men, do attract crazy women though....trust me....I just married one last November, couldnt be happier..... |

Kinda' like Altzhiemer's... If you remember that you forgot something, then you don't have Altzhiemer's... even if you still can't remember what it was you forgot... as long as you know you forgot 'something'
It's when you forget to remember something and don't remember that you forgot it... you're in trouble
... I forgot how to spell Altzhiemer's _________________ 455-Sidewinder Low-Pro
