I am interested in building a 5-600 HP Olds big block. I am interested in crankshaft selection- what crankshaft should I use? Eagle now has a stock throw 455 cast steel crank and CAT now sells a crank (forged??). Does anyone have any experience with these? This motor will probably be normally in the range of 450 HP with a shot of nitrous, if that matters.

Beefing up the bottom end is already on the list, now I need some good advice about the crankshaft- anyone already running either of these cranks?

Thanks in advance.

Stick with the factory cast. Not quite sure of the quality of the other stuff yet.

You can easily build a 500hp bb with a factory nodular crank. Check out the engine build section.

Rule of thumb; run the lightest piston and rods that you can afford.

If you currently do not have a crankshaft, I would run the Eagle. JMO CAT lists a forged, but it is not done. Chances are they won't. They put it out there to see if there is enough interest.

I couldn't find any info on the eagle crank. I was wondering how much can this Cast Steel Crank take? I am also doing something similar to RR, what sort of reinforcement should I do to the short block? Girdles? Motor Plate? Billet Main? Do I need anything of that sort. Sorry for the thread jack, but this motor would be a 10.5:1 Compression pump gas motor. For a street car.

I don't currently have a crank. As for beefing up the bottom, I am considering a girdle of my own design- but that is something that I haven't designed yet.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that these Chinese "Cast Steel" cranks are made from anything better than cast iron.

It's not like they're pouring molten steel into a mold. You can be assured that there's way too much carbon in the metal to be considered "steel".

When we drill for balancing on the eagles, it sure is alot harder to drill than the factory N cranks.

no, better material. It is the same material they use in the big chevy cranks.

A friend of mine has made over 700 passes on a cast eagle crank in a pump gas 505 BBC in a 3800# chevelle running 6.40's in the 1/8th.

Don't feel bad man. I have chinese parts in my engine too. I think it runs pretty good.

Has anyone contacted Eagle regarding the quality control of their castings? I know the casting is chinese, but I thought that they machined them here. Not that that will improve the strength, but you would think that they also test the castings for strength. If for no other reason, you would think they would be concerned about legal concerns. A simple, though destructive metalurgical test would determine the makup of the steel.

Welding up journals are a pain in the ass.
Great material they use in these Laughing
Not a bad crank for the price though
