Since my car project has been taking alot longer than expected (understatement of the year ), and Sean (another Olds guy at Rollins) has been working on a motor for his car, we decided to throw my motor into his car so we could see how it runs with the new camshaft. His car is an 83 Cutlass so things went together pretty well since he also ran a small block. After the motor was in, we did a little dyno testing/tuning and my engine made 15-20 more hp in his car than it did in my car. The cam that we spec'ed out for it is a custom solid flat tappet Crane that has some pretty aggressive lobes on it and thats where the extra power came from.
Anyways, with the engine in my car (which is lighter than Sean's by a little bit, and I was running the headers that I put the 4-2-1 collectors on) ran a best of 11.58 @ 114.18 in some really good conditions early in the year. The best nitrous pass that it ever made was a spinning 10.99 @ 123 with a single stage 130hp shot.
In Sean's car, the new combination ran:
60ft: 1.552
330: 4.693
1/8: 7.36
MPH: 91.53
1000: 9.705
1/4: 11.705
MPH: 112.4
We think there is some more ET with getting the car aligned (he hasnt had it done since he lowered the car the last time) as well as a couple other tweaks that we can try at the track. We were footbraking the car up to 2000 rpm all night and didnt change it much from there. The new cam likes being shifted around 6600-6700 and we havent nailed that down 100% either.
We only got one decent nitrous pass on the car because there were no slick cars at the track putting rubber on the track and the ricers and street cars made the track pretty slippery. Sean has a two stage plate kit on his car and we set the first stage at 50hp, and the second to approximately 85hp. We figured the small first kit would stick well with the 275 radials, but we had issues on all but one pass. I totally forgot the car had a second stage on it until about 150-175 feet down track and I should have grabbed the button inside of the 60ft mark, DOH! With that being said I think that there is another .1-.15 in the car on the nitrous getting that figured out. Even so, we still managed this run:
60ft: 1.47
330: 4.400
1/8: 6.869
MPH: 99.17
1000: 9.022
1/4: 10.85
MPH: 122.5
The weather was ok, but not near as good as it was the day I made my best pass ever with the engine in my car. I hope we can sneak it down into the 11.50s on the motor and 10.50s on the spray with a little more track time. All runs were made with 100% 93 octane in the tank, on 275 MT Street Radials, boxed stock control arms and a TRZ rear anti-roll bar. _________________ Kevin 78 Cutlass

Yeah he was pretty happy. We were trying to get him a 10 second time slip and the track would not cooperate. I dont really blame the track though since there were only a couple cars with slicks at the track, and they were only there at the beginning (when I went the 10.85). I should be out there today with it in this awesome weather that just rolled in, but the wife and I had already made plans to do something else, arrgghh, lol. _________________ Kevin 78 Cutlass

Got back from the track late so this is a short post.
Results:
60 ft: 1.526
330: 4.598
1.8: 7.210
MPH: 93.91
1000: 9.491
1/4: 11.442 <-------how cool is that number
MPH: 115.16
The only major change that we made was that we upped the launch rpm on the footbrake and the car really liked it. The air was pretty good too, but still not as good as we will see early next year. _________________ Kevin 78 Cutlass

Hey Kevin what rpm did you guys leave at and what size stall are yall running? That thing sounds awesome cant wait to get mine back on the road for 08. Hopefully my 82 will be like daylight to dark from last years 8.0s with #8 heads thru the 1/8. I wont be footbraking to 4000 no more gonna try 2500 where my 4200 stall will flash going down the track. Wish i could of seen the car better but it sounded awesome. You guys got the smallblocks down _________________ 355 More strip then street. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aarJHE3Rvz0 |

Hopefully we can borrow a good digital camera for this Wednesday night. If nothing else I know the good camera will be out for the BOPC race.
Its got a JW 10" 3800 converter in it and we stall it up to 2500 rpm. First week out we were stalling it up to 2000. I bet we sell about 50 of these converters a year. Its the same one that I sold Art (SPOLDS) a couple of years ago and it worked well for him too as far as I know.
Sean's motor has #8 heads on it and ran 12.11 on motor and 11.10 with the nitrous before he took it out to freshen it. _________________ Kevin 78 Cutlass

Was seans heads stock like mine was, besides having large valves and being milled down some? I never got to learn my car before i pulled the engine out for the winter. We kept having head gasket probs detonating and stuff. This sounds common for #8 headed motors. What compression and did he have the flat tappet cam in his? _________________ 355 More strip then street. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aarJHE3Rvz0 |

Thats around what my compression was with the speedpro flats and .039 head gasket. I picked up a set of #6s being ported and polished and having larger valves put in them. Instead of a stock fuelpump with 5/16 lines ill have 1/2 lines with a robmcc or one close to it. Was his motor a 355 and stock stroke? _________________ 355 More strip then street. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aarJHE3Rvz0 |
