Just curious how driveable a 2800-3000 stall converter would be on the highway without lock-up?
My brother's TCI trans is absolute junk so I was going to let him have my Art Carr TH-2004R (if it checks out okay). The problem is that my Art Carr trans doesn't have the lockup feature and he's going to need at least a 2800 stall converter.
Will he be okay as long as he runs my transmission cooler? The trans cooler is a 12"x12"x1.75" stacked plate design with a 10" electric fan. He also has a trans temp gauge to put on it also.
Thanks for the help, _________________ Andrew Geeting

that would depend on if it's a loose or tight convertor. Mine is 3800 and kinda tight. It drives pretty good on the street. Trans cooler is a must with higher stall. _________________

with your set up on the street I would go with something like 2200 to 2500. TCI makes a 11" that is about 500 over stock. _________________ Rick M 1972 442 |

I run a PTC 10", about 3200 stall (don't know for sure behind this engine yet) on the street, and it has great manners. Temps are no problem, even on long drives (250+ miles with the last engine). _________________ 1972 Cutlass Supreme, 362cid SBO

Forgot to mention that this isn't for my setup. Its for my brother's '81. Since the 403 rebuild (the second time) its really noticeable.
He has a 2200 stall in it now and its a total dog. The engine doesn't actually kick you in the but until 3000rpm and runs up to 6500 very easily.
And as far as TCI goes.......we won't buy any of their junk again. His current transmission is a TCI unit that is the biggest pile of junk on the planet. _________________ Andrew Geeting

| well don't buy B&M converters, I bought a 3200 stall last fall, we put it in the car and noticed there was something wrong, but at the same time we also installed a new tranny, thinking it was the tranny I didn't address the issue because of the fact that we put it in storage, took it out this spring, and brought it to mechanic to find out for sure, most certainly the converter......and now B&M wont replace/repair because its over there waranty!!!!!!! never again will I buy there crap.....-Chris |

Sorry to contnue...the H/J..but, I would NOT buy another B&M Convertor!
The "Tech-line" told me to not use the Streetmaster and to use a Heavier Duty Part #...It lasted just as long as the "Break-in" of the motor. (less than 450 HP and 400 LBS of Torque)
When actually..."Used", it failed! (Never over 4,000 RPM?!?!!)
It, lasted a little over 4,000 Miles. Pampered!
WTF?

FE3X,
It depends on how your brother's car is geared. If the cruise RPM during regular driving is less than the stall speed, it's going to feel doggy, waste fuel, and generate a lot of heat.
Perhaps it could be left in 3rd most of the time and slipped into o.d. only on a high speed, flat highway. The temp gauge should let him know what he can get away with. |

because the trans was modified to not use one, jack/frost/off.
That 81 needs a 3000 for sure, and it has 3.73s. _________________ www.mjproformance.com
